We often take our mums for granted…uttering curses when asked to do something, back-chatting or even raising our voices. Little do we know just how precious our mother is to us, for our final destination lies at her feet. It is narrated in many hadiths that Muhammad (may Allah bestow peace and blessings upon him) said that Paradise lies at the feet of mothers. The most commonly heard hadith regarding the value of our mothers in Islam follows:

It was narrated that a man came to the Prophet Muhammad (may Allah bestow peace and blessings upon him) and asked him, “Who amongst my near one had the greatest right over me?”

Muhammad (may Allah bestow peace and blessings upon him) replied, “Your mother”.

The man then asked, “Who after that?”

The Prophet (may Allah bestow peace and blessings upon him) replied again, “Your mother”.

The man then asked, who is next,

The Prophet (may Allah bestow peace and blessings upon him) again replied, “Your mother”.

The man then asked, who after that?

The Prophet (may Allah bestow peace and blessings upon him) said, “Your father”.

Ways in which we can show our appreciation to our mother for everything that she has done for us:

  • Sometimes it’s the little things that counts, so a little thank you will never go amiss
  • A hug
  • A smile
  • Helping out with the household chores will lighten her load
  • Stick up for her when someone puts her down
  • Shower her with affection
  • Lavish her with gifts
  • Don’t forget her
  • Show her your appreciation
  • Don’t raise your voice with her
  • Praise her (both in her presence and in her absence)

The thing is though, we could do all of the above for every single second of our lives but we can never compensate her for all the sacrifices she has made for us. The sleepless nights tending to us when we were ill, the constant worrying she does for us every single day, the pain she went through to bring us into this world, the events she missed to stay by our side. We can never pay her back for all she has done but we can try!

in sha Allah may Allah SWT help us remember this daily.
